Quarry Site and Scientific Classification
This stone, with a yellowish-green colour, is scientifically classified as ‘Alabaster (onyx/water marble).’ The production of ‘Tokat Onyx’ continues today in the vicinity of Ayranpınar, Kuşoturağı, Tatlıcak, and Kayaören villages in the Turhal district of Tokat.
Historical References
Tokat Onyx was used as a flooring in the courtyards of Istanbul’s Süleymaniye and Şehzade Mosques, and as columnettes and cladding stone in the main and royal prayer niches of the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne.
