Quarry Site and Geological Origin

The old quarries of Bandirma Breccia are located in the vicinity of the village of Kayacık, about 3 km southeast of the Bandırma district of Balıkesir. This stone is scientifically classified as "Real Marble." It features a breccia textured structure in various shades of pink and contains white calcite veins in places.

Bandırma Brecchi in Ottoman Architecture

Bandırma Brecchi was used as a structural stone in some of the portico arches in the courtyard of the Süleymaniye Mosque with a fountain, and as a decoration stone in the mihrab and pulpit of the Laleli Mosque.
