Restoration works of Selimiye Mosque are nearing completion

Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer told reporters that restoration work at the Selimiye Mosque is nearing completion. The restoration, overseen by the General Directorate of Foundations of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism under the supervision of the Scientific Committee, was initiated in November 2021.

Within the scope of restoration, repairs and cleaning were carried out on the four minarets of the mosque, which showed the most wear. Sixty-four tiles, obtained by replicating the original single turquoise tile located under the minaret cone, were installed in their places. Additionally, strengthening and injection works were performed on the main dome and courtyard domes of the mosque, and the lead coverings of the domes were completed. The two main doors (main entrance) and three courtyard doors were restored to their original form. Glasses and wooden window frames were renewed. A comprehensive landscaping project was also carried out in the courtyard of the mosque.

While the ornamental wallpainting and plaster decorations in the arcaded courtyard domes of the mosque have been completed, it is anticipated that the restoration will be finished in approximately 2-3 months in the dome section where the restoration teams are conducting ornamental Wall painting (kalemişi) work.

The mosque, where restoration work continues, remains open for visits and worship.
